Observations all along the line - Kimball & the Southern Panhandle First
The Kimball Longhorn wrestling team opens its postseason Thursday after a 7 and a half hour road trip to the Plainview Invite on Saturday, Jan. 28. They finished in 13th place out of 20 schools with 40 team points.
The tournament was won by the defending class D state champion Plainview Pirates with 192.5 team points.
Kimball had 4 wrestlers compete this week.
They were without the services of 152-pound standout Trey Schindler due to illness.
James McGinnis got back to his winning ways by placing 2nd in a tough 132-pound bracket. He lost by technical fall to a defending 3-time state champion in the finals from Plainview.
Matthew Johnson was back to action at 106. He was able to place 4th.
Cody Brinkman finished 6th at 120. Justin Klosterman continues to battle in a tough weight class but was unable to place at 138.
“It was a fun to take our guys to my home area to wrestle some solid competition before we start our post-season,” coach Cory McManigal said. “We had a solid day of wrestling. James McGinnis got back on track after last weekend to place 2nd. It was good to have Matthew Johnson back to action and he had a solid day of competition at 106.
“We start our postseason at our conference tournament this Thursday in Bridgeport. We talked about all season wanting to be wrestling our best the next 3 weeks. Intensity will also be ramped up the next couple of weeks, and the guys are ready to compete for conference and district titles.”
The District tournament is Feb. 11-12 and State is Feb. 17-19.
