Observations all along the line - Kimball & the Southern Panhandle First
Candidates Hoping To Represent This Area Answer Observer Questions
The 48th District of the Nebraska Unicameral now includes Kimball, Banner and Scotts Bluff counties due to redistricting.
The 48th seat is currently held by John Stinner, but he will term out at the end of this year. So this year, 24 of the even-numbered seats among the 49 legislative districts of the Unicameral will elect representatives.
Due to redistricting, Sen. Steve Erdman no longer will represent this area.
Following are responses to Observer questions from the five candidates looking to fill the seat. They are being run in alphabetical order of their last names.
The winner of the May 10 primary will determine the victor.
Don Lease
Don Lease II is a fourth generation Nebraskan who actively farms and ranches in
eastern Banner County. He attended and graduated from Banner County High School
and attended the University of Wyoming. There he met Yvonne and they have been
married for 38 years. The couple has four adult children and two adorable
grandchildren. Don and Yvonne currently reside in eastern Banner County on the farm.
Don recently completed a contract with Region 1 Behavioral Health Services to
provide assistance to those people who were adversely affected by the recent
pandemic. When working with the people of the Nebraska Panhandle he enjoyed
building coalitions and partnering with the many different types of organizations and the
good people of the Panhandle. This experience stimulated his desire to file for the 48th
district senate seat.
Don is a strong believer in the life changing power of education for Nebraska's youth.
He believes that we can best influence education by building a strong foundation at the
earliest stages. Children must be both academically and socially prepared to enter the
educational system. Our educational goal is to create lifelong learners who become
productive and responsible citizens.
Don recognizes the need to create a strong and resilient mental health care system.
We have seen a dramatic increase in anxiety in our youth and recognize the effects that
this has on education and life. We need to work to create a better system of care to
teach youth to effectively respond to the stresses that lead to anxiety.
Don believes that the best environmentalists in the world are the agriculture
operators of Nebraska. They rely on the sustainability of their resources to produce and
remain profitable. We need to encourage producers to steward the land and keep
regulation to a minimum. Nebraska's water resources are great and we should work
with our producers to maintain both quantity and quality for all of Nebraska.
Don is a fiscal and social conservative and will work to protect and enhance our
constitutional freedoms, including the right to "constitutional carry". He believes that the
proper function of government is to provide infrastructure and allow entrepreneurs to
create as freely as possible.
I have known Steve Erdman for 25+ years and feel we have a lot of common
viewpoints. I am looking forward to working with him and the entire legislature to make
Nebraska better.
