A PRODUCTIVE MEETING

Colts & Fillies Discuss Horse Care, Volunteering

The Colts and Fillies 4-H club held their monthly meeting Sunday, April 24th at the 4-H building. There were 11 members present accompanied by an uncounted number of parents and helpers. They held a regular business meeting led by president, Emily Whitney.

During the meeting, Mia Varra talked about how to get your horses in good working condition for spring and summer activities. Then LaValla Reher and Mia both talked about how to read vital signs in your horse and spot signs of sickness.

They also talked about how you may use simple everyday objects that you already have at your house or in your trailer for injuries or temporary emergency first aid care. For instance, you can use a diaper as a cushion for a sore hoof or, if frozen, an icepack.

April is National Volunteer Month and the Panhandle Community Service Project has challenged 4-H clubs and individuals to volunteer in their communities.

The Colts and Fillies Horse 4-H Club as a whole wants to recognize member Marley Hernandez for her outstanding community service work.

This outstanding girl did a total of 32 hours of work in her community of Sidney. She helped at the Sidney Health Fair by demonstrating at yoga classes. She also helped elderly people around the house, and helped local businesses with some cleaning. Great job Marley!

The Colts and Fillies turned in a grand total of 95 hours of community service for the month of April!

At the end of the meeting LaValla Reher gave each member an emergency veterinary kit containing vet wrap, wipes, plastic gloves, a wound care kit, a spray bottle, syringe, a diaper, and mouthwash. These supplies will be a great start to every member's first aid kits.

New members are always welcome! If you or someone you know would like to become a member of the Colts and Fillies 4-H Club please contact Lavalla Reher at 307-220-1858 or Mia Varra at 970-988-9877.
