Observations all along the line - Kimball & the Southern Panhandle First
On Tuesday, manslaugher suspect William Shane Serrano appeared in Kimball District Court for a bond review and arraignment.
Serrano's plea of not guilty was accepted by the court for all five counts, which include: Count 1 – manslaughter (Class 2A felony); Count 2 – attempted first-degree murder (Class 2 felony); Count 3 – attempted terroristic threats (Class 4 felony); Count 4 – attempted terroristic threats (Class 4 felony); Count 5 – possession of a firearm during commission of a felony (Class 2 felony).
State-appointed attorney Kelly Breen and Stacy Bach, the Kimball County public defender both representing Serrano, addressed the bond.
Breen said that Serrano suffers from polyps in the wall of the gall bladder, which cause bleeding and often prevent him from eating.
Breen asked that Serrano be released on his own recognizance and be able to obtain medical treatment. Serrano, himself, addressed the court. He said, “I'm sick.” He said he had been hospitalized numerous times.
Doug Warner, the special prosecutor for the case, said the medical situation has been “blown out of portion.” Warner also reminded the court that Serrano has a history of violence, which has included threatening behavior.
District Judge Derek Weimer said he wanted to “give it some thought” and would have a decision on the bond issue in 24-36 hours.
Serrano's next scheduled court appearance is Aug. 19 at 2:30 p.m.
