The Heat Is On; Harvest Is Happening

Good morning, wheat harvest is happening in Banner and Kimball counties, and others I am sure. Still green in places but it won’t be long.

I heard on the radio that over the weekend the weather temperature highs were well into the three digits with 111 degrees reported in McCook.

As much as I love the hot weather I do have to admit, that is too much for me! It was cooler on Monday, but then it’s back up into the 90s for quite some time to come. Good harvest weather.

We start this week with music. The Bands on Broadway series will present the New Wave Time Machine and Loaded Dice this evening, Thursday, July 14th. As most of you know this takes place at the 18th street Plaza in Scottsbluff from 6-9 p.m. and you need to bring your own seating.

In Chadron they will be at the Rail Road Park, same time different bands. The performance of “Legally Blonde” will be at the Judy Chaloupka Theater at WNCC at 7:30 p.m. July 14-16, and for ticket information please call 635-3192.

Fun for the family can be yours at the Fun and Water Expo held at the North Platte Nebraska Resource District as they celebrate their 50th anniversary. Saturday, July 16th between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. There will be Free admission and a Free lunch, bounce houses, a water slide and fun learning with the Conservation Ranger Program.

In Morrill on that same Saturday the annual Horsecreek Rendezvous Days will be celebrated with class reunions, a 5k walk/run, a car show, hamburger fry and free barbecue. Call 308-641-1761 for more information.

The Midwest Theater will be taking a short break as they begin the process of rejuvenating the (for as long as I can remember, and longer) marquee. It will be taken down and restored with more durable material, and as I understand replicated as close to possible as it was originally.

The Riverside Discovery Center has a new art feature which is located inside the Heritage Barn. “Draw Alive” is an interactive program where kids can watch their art “come alive” as they are creating it. Take the kids, grandkids and check it out as it will be available through August 31st.

At Fort Robinson this week: “Something Rotten!” will be performed on the 14th, 16th and 20th at 8 p.m. and on the 17th at 2 p.m.

“Damn Yankees” is on the 15th at 2 p.m., and that evening at 8 p.m. it’s the “Church Basement Ladies” and again for the Ladies on the 20th at 2 p.m. On the 16th at 10 a.m. the performance will be “The Sound of Music” and at 2 p.m. it’s “Desperate Measures.” There will also be an evening performance of “The Sound of Music” on the 19th at 8 p.m. More information is available by calling 1-888-665-1976.
