Observations all along the line - Kimball & the Southern Panhandle First
In 2000, the first grade classes at Kimball's West Elementary School filled and buried a time capsule which was to be opened in the year 2025.
No one knew that before the time capsule would be opened in 2025, elementary classes would be moved out of West Elementary and the building would be sold to Kimball Health Services. Eventually, Kimball Health Services would plan to build a new hospital on the area, so that time capsule has been moved.
The time capsule was unearthed before the recent demolition of the West Elementary School. Although unearthed, it has remained unopened and is now located in the Vo Ag room at the Kimball High School.
The first grade teachers at the time that the capsule was buried were Linda Mihm, Cathy Flores and Bernie Walker. No one is quite sure of the contents of the time capsule, but to the best of their knowledge the contents are things the 6- and 7-year-olds made or brought for the event.
The time capsule, made by Dan Acheson, was buried, cemented over and engraved with the year 2000 and date that it was to be opened in 2025.
People have suggested that perhaps it could be opened at an All-School Reunion.
