Kimball Airport Runway Getting 280-Day Break, Facelift

The Kimball Airport runway will soon be closed for 280 days. During those 280 days, the 6,199 feet of the only runway will be getting a facelift. The runway and taxiway will be closed, however the helipad will remain open.

According to Ryan McElroy, the chair of the Kimball Municipal Airport Authority Board, the runway will get a 6-inch overlay of concrete, which will be the full length of the runway and 75 feet wide. To match the new runway, the taxiways and runway lights will be raised 7 inches.

A grant was secured from the FAA for $3.9 million. While the project's total cost will be $4.2 million, the Kimball Airport Authority will be responsible for 10% of the runway project.

Although the work was scheduled to start in July, the contractor, IHC has not yet begun the work. M.C. Schaff will oversee the project.

When the airport runway project starts and the runway is closed, a notification will appear on a NOTAM program that advises pilots of obstacles and closures. NOTAM refers to Notice to Airmen, but now is Notice to Air Missions. In addition, a lighted X will appear on each end of the runway.

Over 40 years ago, the “new” runway was put in.
