Observations all along the line - Kimball & the Southern Panhandle First
Banner County
Good morning. While we are busy planting and working the fields, fighting fires and gearing up for the upcoming election we find ourselves closing in on September.
I was in one of the stores in the Bluffs recently and as the aisles progressed from the front to the back we literally went through four seasons/holidays. Fall, Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas. Honestly, it is a bit overwhelming.
Way too soon and working toward a burn out by the time for a particular season/holiday to get here. For now, I will just stick to what is going on in our area.
By the way, today, the 22nd, is the Autumn Equinox with equal amounts of day and night.
Here at home, school will be OUT today, September 22nd at 1 p.m. due to parent/teacher conferences, which will be held from 2- 5 p.m. & from 6-8 p.m. There will be NO School the following day, but there will be high school volleyball at Potter/Dix at 5:30 p.m. and football at 7 p.m.
The busy weekend continues Saturday.
Our junior high volleyball team will be competing in Bayard beginning at 9 a.m. and the Morrill Farmers Market will be open from 3-6 p.m. at the FOMO Park.
The 2022 Platte Valley Companies Monument Marathon will start at the Robidoux RV Park in Gering for a race through beautiful scenery. There will be a half marathon, relay and 5k course. Shuttles will begin at 6:15 a.m. and gates will close at 7:30 a.m.
At Pine Bluffs, the 6th annual End of the Trail Kite Festival will be from 11 a.m. - 3 p.m. at the Bluffs Recreation Area.
And for a town in between these two places, Kimball will be celebrating its 96th annual Farmer’s Day. The parade will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday and there will be games, a craft show, free burgers, a salsa contest and more Friday to Sunday. The demolition derby will be at the fairgrounds at 7 pm. the 24th, but there are also horseshoe tournaments, movies, a concert and more. Also there is the book sale at the library! See the full schedule on Page A2.
On Monday, September 26th from 9-11 a.m. at the West Way Christian Church, 1701 W 27th in Scottsbluff, there will be a Living Well Workshop and everyone is invited to attend.
Our cross country team will be in Kearney and the junior high volleyball team will be at Morrill for a tri-meet 4 p.m.
On Tuesday the 27th the Riverside Discovery Center will host a Sensory Safari from 10 a.m. until noon. Featured will be live insects, sounds of nature, live animals, smells of nature and a touch fish tank.
We were at the Omaha Zoo this past summer and my daughter had quite a time with a particular stingray in the touch tank; he/she just kept coming back up to her for another bite of the bait she offered. Dozens of others passed by, but not this one. They are so soft, but pretty fast.
Ending out the week is a trip for the 3rd grade to the Trails West section of the zoo and volleyball for the junior high at Minatare beginning at 1 p.m. with football at 2 p.m. Good luck and safe travel to all of you during the week.
All of this brings us close to the next weekend, right? The next commissioners meeting will be on October 4th at 8:45 a.m.
Until next time, have a great week and take care. Barb Cross at 436-7152.
