Coyote Boys 5-1, Girls 2-5 Going Into Visit To Kimball

The Potter-Dix Coyote basketball team looked to continue its strong start of the season into the New Year, and had a close victory against Bayard followed by a blowout win against South Platte during the first week 2023 to show for their efforts.

The Coyotes travelled to Bayard on Friday, and the Tigers looked to be one of the few challenges the Coyotes had on their regular season schedule, coming into the match up at 5-2, and their defeats coming from out-of-class opponents Sidney and Alliance.

The teams battled hard throughout the matchup, with stretches of no scoring by both sides. Potter-Dix scoring leader Luke Kasten was limited to just tow points in the first half. In the second half, the Coyote offense started to break through he Tigers’ defense and started to score, with Kasten finally getting his shot down and piling up 15 points in the final two quarter. Potter-Dix was able to pull away and hold off the Tigers in the fourth quarter, and took the victory by a 56-49 final score.

Kasten led the scoring for Potter-Dix with 17 points, while Bayard senior Trent Marques led all scorers with 24 points in the game.

The Coyotes next matched up with struggling South Platte, a team that opened the season with three straight wins, but then lost five in a row coming into the contest with Potter-Dix. The Coyotes took control of the game from the outset, putting up 17 points in the first quarter to take a 17-4 lead until the Blue Knights battled back in the second quarter to narrow the Potter-Dix lead to 25-15 at the half.

Potter-Dix came out in the second half with a big scoring run, putting up 29 points in the second half and putting away the Blue Knights by a final score of 54-23. Kasten led all scorers with 28 points in the game, but went 0-6 from beyond the 3-point arc. Junior Dashle Richards led the Blue Knights with 9 points in the loss. Potter-Dix, 5-1, was next scheduled to travel to Kimball on Tuesday for a matchup with the 3-5 Longhorns

Lady Coyotes

Potter-Dix’s Lady Coyote basketball team has struggled early in the season trying to get their offense on track, and the changeover to 2023 did not change their fortunes yet. The Lady Coyotes dropped two games by big margins to start the year, and again struggled on offense in each loss.

On Friday, the girls traveled to match up against a strong Bayard Lady Tigers team, and immediately found themselves in trouble against the tough defense of Bayard. The Lady Tigers shut out the Lady Coyotes in the first period and their defense bullied the Potter-Dix squad into 40 turnovers in the lopsided 66--18 loss. The Lady Coyotes did not get many good looks in this game, and were led by senior Kailey Nicklas’ 6 points.

It did not get any easier for the Lady Coyotes when they hosted South Platte on Saturday, and the sharp Lady Blue Knights won 64-38.

The loss moved the Lady Coyotes’ record to 2-5. Potter-Dix was scheduled to travel to Kimball on Tuesday for a matchup with the 1-8 Lady Longhorns..
