Road 59, Courthouse's Condition Among Issues Before Commissioners

Former Kimball County Sheriff's Deputy Brandon Loy was recognized by the Sheriff's Office for his 14 years of service to Kimball County at the county commissioners meeting on Tuesday, April 4.

Kimball County Highway Superintendent Randy Bymer met with the commissioners to seek bids for the Road 59 project.

The road south of Dix is scheduled for a double chip seal job but will require four new tubes or culverts and repair of the potholes before the chip sealing.

The county road department completed a hydraulic study in 2019, and remains effective today. Bid specs for the rock, oil, and chip seal project will be advertised, and bids will be opened on April 27.

Road department workers have started their 10-hour days. Their days consist of hauling gravel and working roads when conditions are suitable.

The commissioners received an update on the conditions of the courthouse building and grounds from Steve Warner and Zeb Brown.

Work on the new chiller has begun, and the new swipe card reader has been installed in the booking and 911 areas. Ceiling repairs and patching has been completed, and estimates are being obtained for a new ADA ramp into the courthouse.

Sheriff Dave Hottell gave his first quarter report as required. The numbers include 1,495 calls for service to dispatch, 370 sheriff's office calls for service, 38 persons arrested/booked, and 869 inmate days.

County Veterans Service Office Program Coordinator Darcee Wheeland reported that 10 new veterans had been seen in the Kimball County Veterans Office since December. In addition, more than $71,000 has been paid monthly to veterans residing in Kimball County.

The next commissioners meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, April 18.
