Sewer, Water Plans Progress

The Kimball City Council on Tuesday, May 16, spent a significant amount of meeting time on presentations and reports from Olsson Engineering on preliminary expansion and upgrades to the sewer and water systems in Kimball.

Using GIS, surveys and opening up manhole covers, Olsson has determined efficiencies and problem areas. The town has anywhere from 4-inch sewer pipes, which are unacceptable, to 6-inch and 8-inch, with 8-inch required for new construction.

Olsson Engeering recommended four projects: Project A is lines identified by the operator and too small for lining; Project B covers lines to be upsized; Project C is sewer linings of 8, 10 and 12 inches. And finally, the most expensive of the projects, Project D, is the central beltway interceptor replacement sewer from the wastewater treatment plant to Row and Oak. This $8,971,900 sewer project would begin at the wastewater plant on the north side of Kimball and be constructed to the south end of Oak Street. This central beltway would cross under the railroad and paved and gravel roads.

The preliminary total for all four sewer projects is about $15.5 million. No action has been taken by the council or the Board of Public Works.

The preliminary engineering report for the water main replacement projects, six areas of water main extensions, and an additional water well were estimated to be $14.5 million for the city.

In simpler business, the council voted to purchase 12 AED units, one for each department subject to applying for grants. Without the inclusion of grants, the 12 AED units totaled $23,837.

Mary Lynch school crosswalks were addressed by the council and will be painted along with the Lincoln Highway crosswalks in the near future.

Two other items related to the Wastewater Treatment Plant Project were on the agenda for the council's May 24 special meeting.

One was to un-table the recommendation from the Board of Public Works to approve the Resident Project Representative Duties addendum to the Olsson Letter of Agreement for Services for the project. The other item was to approve that same recommendation.

At the special meeting business, council un-tabled the previously tabled agenda item. The agenda item which was tabled from the last regular meeting was a recommendation from the Board of Public Works to approve the resident project representative duties addendum to the Olsson Letter of Agreement for Services for the Wastewater Treatment Plant project.

Olsson's addendum for services for the wastewater treatment plant project was not to exceed $382,500 and was approved at the special meeting.
