County Eyes Insurance Savings

The Kimball County Commissioners on Aug. 15 met with a representative of the Nebraska Association of County Officials to discuss and consider a cost savings option concerning health insurance coverage.

More than 50 counties in the state offer this incentive to not have people double covered, and it could save the county around $100,000 in insurance premiums. Individuals must be on a group insurance plan, but if they are covered by another plan they could opt out of the county plan and receive a stipend.

In other business, Deputy Treasurer Nikki Kilgore presented, and the commissioners received, the 2022 Distress Warrant Return. Over $10,000 was collected from 39 of the 53 distress warrants. Only 14 were not able to be collected.

People continue to flood the Kimball County Visitors Center, according to Interim County Tourism Director Natasha McFaul. In July, 181 more people entered the building than in the previous month, and in August they racked up 364 visitors. McFaul told the commissioners that paint classes are scheduled and will begin soon.

A number of discussion items crossed the table of the commissioners, including the agenda for the City/County Park and Recreation Executive Board and security for the courthouse.

Security issues centered on installing a card key entrance to the basement of the courthouse and upgrading the 28 cameras throughout the courthouse and annex. In addition, the need for courtroom cameras was noted.

Christy Warner, KCTS administrator, presented financials, including repayment of $36,661 to the county’s general fund.

Warner said that $276,566 of federal funds have been brought back into Kimball, while $69,892 of state tax money has returned to Kimball. They have collected $37,272 from advertisements on boards and vehicles. Fares collected from insurance total $16,052, and fares from rides are $32,254.

Budget workshop meetings are scheduled for August 17, 18, 21, 22, 23 and 28 if all are needed.

The next commissioners meeting is Sept. 5 at 9 a.m.
