School Starts; Flowerfield Begins Soon; Community Sale At Museum

Good morning! Boy, oh boy, has the summer flown by! Although it is the middle of August, I am going to push it for as long as I can. A few cooler days at the beginning of this week felt good but also gave us a little taste of what is to come.

School has started this past week for most of us and that always changes the tempo for a lot of things. Somewhat of a less play and down to serious business attitude, maybe.

Flowerfield School will begin before long, yeah!

The folks in Alliance are gearing up for a Rubber Duck Draw with a 2024 Chevrolet Trax the top prize; ducks are available at their local Runza.

Many evening activities are planned on Friday, August 18th, including:

• The summer music series concert in Sidney at Hickory Square beginning at 5:30 p.m.

• A pottery painting class at 102 E. Overland, titled “Swift Night – I’m a Nightmare Dresses Like a Daydream” from 6:30 - 9 p.m.

• “Build your own Bouquet with Candice” at B.E. Farms at 7.p.m.

• Star gazing at the Wildcat Hills Nature center. Bring a blanket and join them while they watch for some sightings of the Perseids meteor shower. This starts at 9 p.m.

Saturday, August 19th, is full of a variety of events going in all four directions and even some here at home.

At the Banner County Museum there will be a community garage sale from 8 a.m.-2 p.m.

Up north, in Gering at the Saddle Club beginning at 10 a.m., there will be an All State High School Timed Event Challenge with many competitions for both boys and girls, and for information please call 631-5401.

Still moving north, the Riverside Discovery center will host a School Spirit Party between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. They plan on having a conservation carnival, games prizes, a bounce house, face painting, the splash pad, and a DJ who might just shake a leg with a local school mascot or two! So put your favorite school outfit on and join them. For more information, please call 630-6236.

On up the road on Avenue I, at MJ’s and The Bard’s Den-Books & Beyond, they will be having a Summer Craft Fair with vendors, snowies, and food trucks. The address is 2400 Ave. I and the time is from 8 a.m. - 2 p.m.

The farmer’s market will also be on 18th Street between 8-11 a.m. and in Morrill starting at 11 a.m.

Swinging further to the west, at the Scotts Bluff County fair grounds in Mitchell, there will be a demolition derby beginning at 5:30 p.m. Rev ’em up & smash em up!

Closer to home down south and back west, Bushnell Day 2023 (see story on this page) will be celebrated with a parade, cornhole tournament and hog roast, and in Minatare they will celebrate Tabor Days with a parade, car show, tractor pull ( 10.a.m.), bounce houses and the DJ Dr. Wattz.

A little further east in Bridgeport at the Prairie Winds Community Center, folks will celebrate the 97th annual Greek Festival with great food, a cooking demonstration, and dance performances. This all begins at 1:30 p.m.

The only other thing you might find to do would be to find a good movie. The Midwest will offer its monthly Free classic movie on Saturday, the 19th at 1:30 p.m. with Alfred Hitchcock’s “Vertigo” starring Jimmy Stewart. They will also show “Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning, Part 1” on the 18th at 7:30 p.m., the 19th at 6:30 p.m. and on the 20th at 1:30 p.m. The Sky View Drive-In will show the movie “Elemental” on the 18th & 19th. Gates open at 8 p.m. and movie time is 8:45 p.m.

Sunday, August 20th, is Family Faith Day 2023 at the Rock Church in Scottsbluff with church, baptisms, food, fun and a jump show, and there is a gardening class at the Meadowlark Hearth Farm between 3:30 and 5 p.m. at 120024 Everett Drive, Scottsbluff.

On the 22nd, “Life Cycles,” part of the NPNRD’S Little’s Wild Workshops, will take place at the NRD at 9 a.m. This lasts for about an hour. Parents are welcome to stay, and invited ages are 4-10 years old.
