Local News Centers Around Harvest; Remembering John Jones

Banner County

Good morning, Banner County, here is a little News, Notes and Nonsense.

Local news is still centered around harvest as we are in need of rain for the next crop planting and the harvesting of the remaining summer crops.

School, of course, has started and that means fall sports. Volleyball and football games got underway last week.

The next county commissioners meeting is on Tuesday, September 5th at 8:30 a.m. and everyone is welcome.

We are sorry to hear of the passing away of lifelong Banner County resident, John Jones. Our sympathy goes out to his family. I personally will always remember his ever ready smile and him “dancing around the Christmas tree.”

John’s obituary appears on Page A6.

Even with the abundance of happy sunflowers everywhere it is hard to believe that we are now into the month of September, but here we are.

Friday, the 1st, kicks off the month with a Creative Kids studio – a Potter Party at Elodies Oddities, 102 E. Overland in Scottsbluff. This is advertised as a “Hogwarts Pottery Camp” and more information is available on the store’s website.

This is also the date for the SkyView Drive-In to host Retro-Weekend, with “Inkheart” showing on the 1st and on the 2nd, and “Looney Tunes: Back in Action,” the 20th anniversary for these crazy guys; both movies will show at 8 p.m.

From the 1st to 3rd is the annual Potter Days celebration.

It will include a 5k color run, parade (10 a.m. on Saturday ), bounce houses, sand volleyball, open bowling, food trucks, a beer garden, off the road races, golf, and a “Party in the Pasture’ with the band Mud Country. For a schedule of events, call 308-249-2091.

This weekend is Labor Day weekend, so of course all county and federal offices will be closed, so keep that in mind.

On Saturday, September 2nd, the 12th annual High Plains Riot car show will be held in the parking lot at Panhandle Co-Op in Scottsbluff between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m.

Also on Saturday, the farmers markets will continue in Morrill and on 18th street. Local gardeners and some of my neighbors are sure getting some great tomatoes right now. Mine are still a beautiful shade of green.

The CFD West Museum will host the second part of its annual Historic Ranch Tour, and if you get to Cheyenne at the Historic Trolley by 10a.m. on the 2nd. they will take you to the Burnett Land and Livestock Ranch over by Carpenter, Wyoming, feed you lunch and have you back in Cheyenne by 6 p.m. More information is available at http://www.oldwestmuseum.org.

Closer to home, in Gering at the Five Rocks Amphitheater on Saturday & Sunday there will be a Free Horizon Music Fest. The music will begin on the 2nd at 3 p.m. and on the 3rd at 11 a.m. Bring a lawn chair and enjoy music with Vota, The Afters, CITIZENS, Jared Anderson, Sarah Reeves, Meredith Andrews, Jordan Feliz and Crowder.

Also on Sunday, September 3rd, there will be a Seed Fest at Meadowlark Hearth Farm, Free and all day. They are located at 120024 Everett Drive in Scottsbluff.

Well, have a great week and take care until the next time. Barb Cross at 436-7152.
