RC Airshow Gets The Green Light For Farmers Day Weekend
The Remote Control Airshow on Sunday of Farmers Day weekend is set to happen, according to organizer Rick Kirby. The Kimball Kamakzee Club Flyers R/C Airshow is at the Kimball Airport at 10 a.m.
The airshow was "up in the air" for some time because the FAA had instituted a new rule that required drones and RC aircraft to have a remote ID number. Each craft needed to have its own digital license plate.
The deadline for obtaining the remote ID was 12:01 a.m. Sept. 16. With only four manufacturers of the remote IDs, 191,000 units were on order, but no chips were available. So, it was virtually impossible to obtain an ID number. The Kimball club had this hurdle to overcome.
Due to the availability of chips, the FAA delayed the remote ID rule. So, drone users and RC flyers have until March 2024 to get an ID number. The remote control ID will track the flight, altitude and speed of drones and RC aircraft with the remote ID number.
Previous Farmers Day fly-ins had 10-15 pilots with 100-150 spectators, but this year there may be fewer due to the last-minute deadline delay by the FAA. But Kirby assures everyone that it will be a fun and exciting day at the airport with the RC airplanes.
