Coyote Boys 1-1, Girls 0-2

Potter-Dix’s Coyote basketball teams started their seasons with losses and look to turn things around quickly before they fall too far in the standings.

With an opening matchup on the road against a tough Morrill team, the Lady Coyotes were overmatched and quickly fell behind. The Lady Lions’ defense was too strong for the Lady Coyotes to mount a consistent attack, while the Morrill girls had no trouble setting their offense and scoring. The game was pretty much decided before the end of the first half, and the Lady Lions breezed to a 61-18 victory. Morrill sophomore Katelyn Walker led all scorers with 25 points.

The boys’ team fared a little better, but was unable to get past the tough Morrill defense and fell by a score of 43-31 in their opener.

On Saturday, the Lady Coyotes traveled to Otis to match up against the Lone Star Lady Longhorns. They played a solid first quarter, but trailed the Lone Star team16-9. The Lady Coyotes had a very strong second quarter on offense, putting up 16 points, but their defense could not stop the lady longhorns who put up 15 points in the quarter to take a 31-25 lead into the halftime break. Lone Star had a strong third quarter on defense, shutting down the Lady coyote offense and limiting the Potter-Dix girls to just four points in the quarter. Lone Star pulled away in the fourth quarter with 20 points in the frame on their way to a 67-41 victory. The boys played a very close game against the Longhorns, battling hard for points and playing strong defense. In fact, it was defense on both sides of the court that dominated the game, and the Coyotes hung in until the very end until they were able to get a two point lead and hang on for a 30-28 victory.

The girls start their season with a 0-2 mark, while the boy’s team looks to be heading in the right direction at 1-1. The teams will be hosting Creek Valley in Potter on Friday.
