Longhorns Sitting At 4-2 During Break

That's Three Wins More For Improving Program Than Last Year At This Time

The Longhorns boys basketball tram is sitting at 4-2 during its winter break after a 54-46 loss at Hershey.

Next up for Kimball High basketball is South Platte, which comes to K-Town on Jan. 3. JV play starts at 4 p.m.

Friday's game vs. Hershey was a very back and forth game all night. We discussed and executed a new offense well the day before in practice and were very hopeful that we would be able to continue that execution come game time.

The start of the game went very well as we were able to hit shots and get a few defensive steals to go on a 12-2 run right off the bat. Unfortunately we were not able to close the quarter out with the 10 point lead we had built, but we still felt pretty good being up 12-6 at the quarter's end. The second quarter had more back and forth but we started to turn the ball over more, giving them more opportunities to take back any momentum we had built.

At halftime we were still only down by 1 point and felt that if we could eliminate some of those momentum killers in the second quarter that we would be fine. We were once again able to find the lead halfway through the third, 21-20.

However, Hershey was able to hit difficult shots every time it seemed that we were finally getting our footing back. Unfortunately, uncharacteristic type turnovers, which accounted for 26 of their points, ended up being just too much for us to overcome that night.

Give our kids credit though as they never got down on themselves too much and were able to keep battling all the way to the final buzzer.

I know that this loss was a little disappointing going into the holiday break, but we as a staff feel really good about our team and have 3 more victories than this point last season. We will continue to work hard after the break and with a lot of home games coming this January and February and can't wait to see just how well these players will do in front of their crowd!

Highlights include Kyler Lusche getting another Double-Double leading us in scoring with 12 pts and 10 reb.  Ryker Behrend had a good night with 11 pts, 3 stl, a 2.00 VPS rating.

Brandon Paxton added 10 points and 6 rebounds. Braxton Miller added  7 pts, 6 rbs, while leading us with 4 stl and 4 ast. Trevor Fuss hit his only attempt for a three pointer while adding 2 stl, 2 ast, and leading our team with a 3.50 VPS rating. To round out the scoring Wyatt Cords added 3 pts on a shot from beyond the arc.

JUNIOR VARSITY

The JV game vs. Hershey JV as a 28-53 loss. Kaymen Lusche once again led us in scoring with 10 pts, making 2 from beyond the arc in the process. Greg Bingham and Landen Nunley each added 5 pts, while Trey Cook and Luke Berger rounded out the scoring with 4pts apiece.

FRESHMEN

In the freshman game vs. Sidney on Dec. 18, Sidney took the contest 31-47. However, our freshmen, and a few sophomores, moved the ball well and got some good shots up.

Highlights included: Kaymen Lusche leading us with 15 pts (4 from beyond the arc), 9 stl, 4 ast, & 4 reb. Trey Cook added 4 pts, 8 stl, and took 1 chg. Greg Bingham had 6 pts, 5 reb, 3 stl. Landon Nunley rounded out the scoring with 6 pts while adding 5 stl, 4 reb, & 1 blk.

Sam Anderson added 4 reb and 1 blk, Eddie Duran 3 reb & 1 stl, Wyatt Cook had 1 reb & 1 ast, and Conrad Kaminski added 1reb & 1stl.
