Teams Open 2024 With Bayard And South Platte
The Coyote basketball teams opened 2024 with a challenging task, games against rivals Bayard and South Platte. The boys team was able to grab wins in both contests, while the Lady Coyotes struggled with losses in their first contests of the new year.
The Lady Coyotes opened on Friday night against a very strong Bayard team, and it was quickly apparent that the Lady Coyotes did not have the firepower to keep up with the Lady Tigers.
The Bayard girls opened a big lead early and cruised all night, ending the game with a 59-9 victory. Potter-Dix’s Madison Williamson led the scoring for the Lady Coyotes with seven points, while Bayard had three players in double digits.
The boys had a strong game against Bayard, matching their scoring and using strong defense to keep the Tigers off-balance.
The Coyotes were able to grab a lead and hold on, taking the victory 46-40. Sophomore Dylan Tabor led the scoring for Potter-Dix with 15 points, while senior Brayden Kasten put up 12 points in the victory.
On Saturday, the teams traveled to Big Springs, and it was a similar performance against the Blue Knight teams. In the girls game, the Lady Blue Knights came out fast, and piled up 25 points in the first quarter while shutting down the Potter-Dix offense.
By halftime, the South Platte squad had a 39-6 lead, and then cruised through the second half on their way to a 61-15 win. Senior Madison Williamson and sophomore Kenzie Shoemaker each had four points in the loss.
For the boys, it was another battle that had the defense setting the tone, and both teams played a close game.
But the Coyotes were able to get a lead and again hang on, pulling out the 47-43 victory on the road. Senior Brayden Kasten had a stellar night, putting up 19 points and grabbing 5 steals in the victory.
The teams were next scheduled to match up with Kimball on Jan. 11.
