Observations all along the line - Kimball & the Southern Panhandle First
Good morning! Beautiful spring weather, for today at least. Stinking high winds and tumbling tumble weeds, welcome to Nebraska!
Today, April 18th, there is No School at home, but the middle school track team will be headed to Kimball. There is NO School tomorrow either.
Believe there is some ACT testing going on.
Anyway, there will be a “Women As Warriors” self defense seminar at WNCC tonight from 6-9 p.m. For more information and to register, please call 635-6700.
Also beginning at 6 p.m. there will be an informative Medicare Program at the SHIP Office, 1930 E 20th Place in Scottsbluff. This is expected to end at 7:30 and more information is available at 308-765-5546.
At 7 p.m. the Midwest Theater is the place to be if you would like to hear the Showcased Gering High School Speeches.
The classic movie “Ben Hur” will play at the Midwest on Saturday, April 20th at 1 :30 p.m. This one is free and in celebration of the 65th anniversary of the movie. Anyone watch that at the Kimball Drive-In a few years back?
Another Freebie that day is Free Landfill Day between 7 a.m. and noon in Gering.
Banner County Prom 2024 is that evening, and in observance of Earth Day, the zoo will be celebrating with “Spring Clean-Up” and everyone is invited to join them between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.
Earth Day is Monday, April 22nd and I know our students will be out cleaning things up along the spur and in town, so please be extra cautious and aware.
The final performance of the “Revolutionists’”at Chadron State College will be on Sunday, April 21st at 2 p.m. This is about four women during the French Revolution.
On Monday the 22nd, you can join the folks in Kimball in a “Paint A Pot” session at Beer & Loathing, 206 S Chestnut, at 6 p.m.
In Scottsbluff at the Midwest, the Scotts Bluff Robotics Community Showcase will start at 6:30 p.m. This is an invitation to the public to come and see what they have been up to. Or, head over to Gering High School for a “Taste of Jazz” performance, which will begin at 7 p.m.
Also on the 22nd at 6:30 p.m., the Goodhand Theatre in Kimball will host a FREE screening of “Born To Rein” sponsored by Plains Historical Society.
This is about local National Hall of Fame horseman John Nerud and father and son trainer Marion and Jack Van Berg. John was born in Minatare. This film is in part in recognition of the 100th anniversary of America’s first Triple Crown winner, Sir Barton, who served in the Army Remount Program at Fort Robinson. Just a side note here. If you read a lot, or a little, the book “HORSE” by Geraldine Brooks is an excellent read.
Tuesday the 23rd sees the middle school and high school competitors heading to Scottsbluff for all day challenges, and the following day the kindergartners will be off to the Legacy of the Plains Museum in Gering for a field trip. Yep, it’s that time of year already. Safe travel and have fun!
Couple more notes for you. We are sorry to learn of the recent passing of Melvin Lerwick, a long-time and past Banner County resident. Our sympathy to his family.
Also, here is a heads up. The Pre-K 2024-25 Round Up for Banner County School will be held on the 26th. Kindergarten Round Up will be soon after!
Well, all for now. Have a great week and take care until next time. Barb Cross at 436-7152.
