Observations all along the line - Kimball & the Southern Panhandle First
In a unanimous vote, the Kimball School Board amended teacher Christine Lewis’s employment contract from full- to quarter-time employment in a hearing conducted after the regular board meeting on Monday evening, April 8.
The board deliberated during in executive session and returned from the executive session to approve the contract amendment. Superintendent Trevor Anderson presented the administration’s case to amend the contract due to the loss of distance learning students in Spanish 1 and 2 classes from area schools outside the school disrict and their lack of financial contribution. The enrollment students in Spanish 1 and 2 went from 102 students to four students.
During the regular board meeting, Superintendent Anderson’s financial update reported that 44.84% of the budget spent with 58% of the fiscal year completed – with actual year-to-date expenditures at $5,091,163.
The current cash balance in the General Fund is $2,309,469.
Both principals reported on enrollment, testing and upcoming activities.
Under student presentation, Theo Perry gave his 4-H speech to the school board. Theo detailed his last two years of showing bucket calves at the Kimball-Banner County Fair.
In other reports, Elite director Marcie Pratt explained that the Elite program is in its fifth year of grant funding, and it had to reapply for the 6-10 program. It should receive a response to its application this month.
Pratt said they average 40-45 kids daily, although they usually average 50 on Wednesday. Next year, the plan is to have Elite on Monday through Thursday until 6 p.m. and Friday from 8 a.m. to noon.
The review of board policies was the only agenda item, and the policies were approved.
The scholarship committee will meet on April 15 to make selections for three scholarships.
The next regular board meeting will be on May 13. Graduation is May 11.
