Observations all along the line - Kimball & the Southern Panhandle First

Can You Believe It? School Years Starts Monday

Banner County

This week brings us to the third week of August and the first day of school in Banner County, Kimball and Potter-Dix on Monday the 19th. Wow, seems crazy.

Banner County School will have regular hours. Early dismissal times are 11 a.m. at Potter-Dix and 1 p.m. at Kimball.

Watch out for those students who may be walking and the big yellow buses!

Today is August 15th and the bands that are at the 18th Street Plaza tonight are The Darts, a rock ’n roll trio from Kearney, and Not.Green, a group out of Colorado whose music is a tribute to Greenday. Music will begin at 6 p.m.

The movie of the week at the Midwest Theater begins on the afternoon of the 16th at 1:30 with the showing of “Ezra.” It will also play that evening at 7 and again at 7 the following evening and finally on the 18th at 1 p.m.

Many happenings on the 17th:

• Bushnell Day will begin at 10 a.m. with the theme “Boots & Roots,” and everyone is invited to help them celebrate.

• Also at 10 a.m. in Minatare there will be an Antique Tractor and Pick-Up Pull. The starting gate will be 1/2 block west of the Post Office.

• In Torrington beginning at noon there will be a Louder event with Thunder in the Valley at 5123 Lift Station Road .

• At 1:30 p.m. is the 98th annual Greek Festival which will begin at the Prairie Winds Community Center in Bridgeport and will continue until 9 p.m. Authentic food, music and more!

• At the Midwest Theater, the classic movie of the month will be Alfred Hitchcock’s “North by Northwest” at 1:30 p.m.. This will be the 65th anniversary of that film.

• Little later on in the day, the Western Nebraska Pioneers in Gering will host a Panhandle Food Truck Festival. They are located at 800 13th St. and besides the food you can enjoy craft vendors, a cornhole tournament, bounce houses, water slides and more. This fun family event will be between 4 and 9 p.m.

• That evening there will be a Night Sky Viewing at the Wildcat Hills, hosted by SRA. The Perseid Meteor Shower is the object of detection beginning around 8:30/9:00 p.m. They will be on the back loop of the park with a high powered telescope for your use. Remember to bring lawn chairs or a blanket!

On the 19th, Fort Laramie will host “The Unfortunate Affair: All About a Mormon Cow.” Yep, you read that right. It will be from 10 a.m to 2 p.m. at 965 Grey Rocks road and I guess you had better check it out to learn what is up with that cow?

On another note, the Gering Public Library is accepting those plastic bread ties we all toss away to be donated to an organization that recycles them and uses any money received to buy wheelchairs for underprivileged kids. So if you have the time drop them off and they will send them on.

The Western Nebraska Arts Center has the display “Silk ‘n Silver” in the Main Gallery through the 25th of this month.

In the Bronson Gallery, “The 2024 Old West Balloon Festival “ will be displayed through the 28th. This particular art work recognizes different celebrations from local artists.

Well that is it for now. Take care and have a great week. Until next time, Barb Cross at 436-7152.
