Observations all along the line - Kimball & the Southern Panhandle First
A Dix man is facing a variety of charges after an incident on Oct. 8. Mike Evans has been charged with assault on a peace officer, resisting arrest, obstruction of law enforcement, flight to avoid arrest, willful reckless driving, and driving under revocation for the incident which started with a Kimball County Sheriff’s deputy attempting to stop Evans south of Dix on county roads 59 and 18.
Deputy Youngquist said that while he was on patrol, he observed a vehicle run off the road, get back on the road, and drive down the center. When Youngquist used emergency lights and sirens, he said the vehicle continued for about 8 miles, speeding and failing to stop. Entering the village of Dix, the vehicle finally stopped on the north side of highway 30.
Youngquist said he ordered the driver out and to lay on the ground, but Evans attempted to re-enter his vehicle. Evans was tased and fell on the ground. Youngquist’s affidavit states that: “He began to get back up and ripped the taser barbs out of him. I reloaded my taser and again ordered him to stay on the ground.”
Youngquist had requested backup, and Officer Mackenzie arrived, but Evans continued refusing the verbal commands. A physical altercation continued, with additional officers arriving on the scene. Evans was finally subdued, arrested and taken into custody. Evans was taken by ambulance to the Kimball hospital, but he was medically cleared and transported to the Kimball County Jail.
Originally, Evans had a $30,000 bond, but it was reduced to $5,000, and on Tuesday morning, Evans bonded out of jail.
